The world of canal boating is almost like an alternative reality, existing quietly alongside urban streets, yet undiscovered by those caught up in the Christmas shopping frenzy. We've got three surprising suggestions for anyone looking for the magic of Christmas on the Grand Union canal this December.

1. Canal-Side Grotto

Well-known for his generosity, Santa Claus can sometimes be found volunteering for Hillingdon Narrowboats Association; a charity based at Coppermill Lock, Harefield on the Grand Union canal. Their five boats can usually be booked for day trips or residential cruises and they also hire boats out to school, community and voluntary groups. They are now running popular trips to see Santa in his canal-side grotto at the weekends in December. Visit the website for booking details.

2. Elves on Board

Hidden Depths Canal Cruises are offering festive trips with Santa and his elves through the Islington tunnel, departing from Kings Cross. Narrowboat Lapwing will be transformed with fairy lights, tinsel, mince pies, and carol singing on 20th and 21st December.

3. Floating Photo Booth

The Floating Showroom is a venue available for hire in London for private celebrations and corporate events. During December it has become a floating festive photo-booth with several different sets, costumes and props to choose from. The personalised photo sessions are guided by a professional photographer as a fun experience with seasonal drinks and snacks. This weekend they're in Kings Cross, and next weekend it will be Little Venice.
