Boat festival season is now upon us and many are polishing their brasses this week in readiness for display at the Canalway Cavalcade. Organised by volunteers from the Inland Waterways Association this waterways festival has been held in London’s Little Venice since 1983.

Here’s the Boatshed Guide of what to see and do in Little Venice at the weekend.

1) Boats

Expect to see around 130 colourful, traditional narrowboats, many decorated with bunting, moored along the stretch of the Grand Union Canal between Blomfield Road, Warwick Avenue and Warwick Crescent. There will also be roving traders, and boating activities to enjoy.

2) Refreshments

Look out for the food stalls, local English pubs, a floating café and a real-ale bar when you’re in need of food or drink.

3) Entertainment

Traditional British summer fete fun includes Morris dancing, competitions and family friendly activities.

4) Shopping

There will be trade show stalls selling crafts and chandlery.

5) Pageant

Don’t miss the illuminated procession of boats. It starts in Browning’s Pool at 9.30pm and finishes at 10pm with a live band playing from the band stand.

Even without a festival going on, this leafy tree-lined area of Maida Vale is a lovely area for a canal-side stroll. Head up towards the Maida Hill tunnel if you would like to gongoozle at the array of colourful canal boats permanently moored there.

The Canalway Cavalcade takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday May 2nd -Monday May 4th) and it’s free! And Boatshed Grand Union will be there too. Come and find us and chat about boats!
