Water and fire don’t usually mix, so what’s a boat-lover to do when called upon to celebrate Guy Fawkes night? Here are four ways to enjoy November’s explosive celebrations.

1) Travel by Boat

The wonderful thing if you’re looking for your first boat for sale is anticipating the freedom that you will soon enjoy, to arrive at some beautiful location or festive event aboard your own cosy floating home.

Sometimes a local canal-side pub will put on a bonfire and firework display. One year my family moored outside The Grand Junction Arms at Bulbourne, enjoying hot chocolate and roasted chestnuts before wrapping up the kids and taking them over to the beer garden for their first ever bonfire night. Perhaps one of your local canal-side pubs offers a firework display? Find your nearest one at www.canalandriversidepubs.co.uk

2) Grand Union Canal Fireworks Display

Each year the Cassiobury Park fireworks and bonfire night in Watford is held on the Saturday nearest to 5th November. In 2015 this will be 7th November. There will be two displays (an earlier one for children), a bonfire, entertainment, food and drink. There will also be live music and the first display is at 6.15pm. For more details see the Watford Borough council website.

3) The London Lord Mayor’s Show

The 800th Lord Mayor’s Show is on Saturday November 14th and begins with a river pageant at 9am. The procession starts at 11am and there are events all day with fireworks over the Thames to finish, between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges. This spectacular display lasts from 15 – 20 minutes and begins at 5.15pm. http://lordmayorsshow.london

4) BCN Society Bonfire Rally

The Birmingham Canal Navigations Society are holding their annual Bonfire Boat Rally from 31st October 2015 to 1st November 2015 at Smethwith Galton Valley. There will be real ale, fireworks, live music and a barbeque for boaters, local residents and visitors. For more information visit http://www.bcnsociety.co.uk
