Spade is a historic narrowboat.originally built in 1929 with a riveted iron hull and an elm bottom. She was an open, horse-drawn, butty.
In the 1980's she had the base replaced with 10mm steel, the superstructure added and was shortened from 70ft to 62ft. She was fitted with a 1945 Vintage Gardner engine.
She has good sized windows and two side hatches in the living space and another two in the engine room, which is full height.
The paintwork is in need of attention, particularly the traditional scumbling which has deteriorated. The paintwork is, however, still good enough to protect the boat.
The hull was blacked last year.

Entering through the side hatch and going forward, there is a well fitted kitchen with hob, eye level oven and a fridge.There is plenty of storage and work top space.
Forward of this is a large living area with a raised dinette, and room for chairs or sofas. There is an enamelled solid fuel stove and a bookcase. Double doors to front deck, with security shutters.
Going aft from the side hatch, there is a lobby with a wardrobe and a bedroom with fixed double.
There is a bathroom with hip-bath, shower, toilet and basin.
Next comes the full height engine room with the magnificent Gardner engine and two side hatches.
Aft of this is a traditional boatman's cabin with a small pull down double bed concealed in a cupboard, plus a further small single. There is a beautiful boatman's stove and the cabin is traditionally painted.
There are traditional roses and castles throughout the boat and a variety of painted canalware items personalised to the boat.
Heating is vial an Aldi gas boiler and 4 radiators as well as the two stoves. Hot water is provided by the Aldi and an engine calorifier.

Here is the dream of any canal enthusiast, a stunning historic canal boat with a comfortable living area, a superb Gardner engine and a traditional boatman's cabin.
Built in 1929 by Crichton & Co. at Salteney on the river Dee near Chester, Spade was one of four 70ft, iron-sided, elm-bottomed butties ordered by Midlands & Coast Canal Carriers Ltd. One of the boats was named Diamond; the other two were either Apollo and Star or, Ace and Club (records and memories differ).
M.& C.C.C.Co. was formed in 1922 and based at Broad St. wharf, Wolverhampton, until they were taken over by Fellows Morton and Clayton in 1939.
Spade was probably horse drawn throughout its working life. It had a small forecabin in addition to the boatman’s cabin at the back. It is believed to have been worked mainly on the Shropshire Union Canal ( The Shroppie) by one family who raised six children on the boat during the course of their travels. It was eventually sold into private hands in the early 1940's and converted for pleasure use.
The name was changed to Jeanie by an ex-boatman named Fred Parker. He was a well known character on the canals of the north-west, and lived and travelled on the boat for about 20 years. John Waynham of Catherine-le-Barnes bought it in the late 1980!s and converted it to its present design, with steelwork executed by Dave Harris of Stone. The elm bottom was replaced with 10mm thick steel, the length shortened to 62ft. and a new back-end and fully insulated 4mm steel cabin top fitted. The Boatmans cabin is fitted out and decorated in traditional style; the 24" prop, is driven via an offset shaft by a Gardner 3L2 (three cylinder) diesel engine of 1945 vintage, with speedwheel and wheel-operated gearchange.
The original name and Co. livery was restored and subsequently repainted by Warwickshire Flyboat Co.
A real enthusiasts narrowboat which would be great as a live-aboard, holiday boat or a grand hobby.
